The worldview of the work

Zen, Blade of Stillness

Artist: MADARA

This work is not a portrait of calmness. It is a portrait of the force that makes calmness possible. Black Sumi ink holds weight, tremor, and inner currents. Across it, I place one silver stroke as a blade. It does not cut another person. It cuts the noise inside us.

A cultural insight: in Japanese aesthetics, stillness is not emptiness. It is “ma”, the active interval that gives movement its power. Silence can be preparation, not absence. That is why the silver line is not decoration. It is the edge that defines stillness.

Behind the Scenes

The first decision was to place the silver line perfectly horizontal. A diagonal line easily creates a direction of emotion: upward for resolve, downward for descent. But I wanted a line that does not move emotion. I wanted a line that stops it. A single horizontal stroke becomes a boundary that makes the mind pause.

In the process, I first build a “vessel” with black Sumi ink—tones, density, and subtle fluctuations that can hold inner noise. Immediately after that, before any hesitation enters, I run the silver in one continuous line. The silver is not decoration. It is the blade that tells the multiplying stream of thoughts: stop here.

A horizontal line has the feeling of cutting time. The moment the viewer’s gaze locks onto that level axis, the speed of thinking drops and the air becomes still. That is the shift I want to create through calligraphy.

Silver changes with light. In daytime it appears gentle; at night it looks sharper. This work is completed together with the space that holds it.

Kanji meaning

Dictionary-focused meaning of “禅 (Zen)”

“禅 (Zen)” is originally a Buddhist term, commonly understood as an abbreviation of “禅定,” which refers to a state of calm, sustained concentration where the mind becomes settled and scattered thoughts quiet down.

Etymologically, it traces back to the Sanskrit word “Dhyāna” (meditative absorption). In Chinese translation it became “禅那,” and eventually shortened to “禅.” In other words, “Zen” is not simply “calm vibes.” As a character, it points to a discipline: the practice of focusing the mind and stabilizing one’s inner state.

A small insight: In English-speaking contexts, “Zen” is often used to mean “relaxing” or “minimal.” But the dictionary-root meaning of 禅 is closer to “a method of settling the mind.” Returning to that original sense changes how the single character is perceived—less as an atmosphere, more as a technique.
