The emotions, prayers, and will to live that dwell within us cannot always be spoken, yet they reach the world in invisible waves.
This piece captures those flowing waves through the lines of ink.
At the moment the brush is taken in hand, consciousness transcends form and manifests as pure movement.
That movement is both fierce and tranquil.
“Hibiki” is born at the meeting point between strength and stillness.
Sumi ink is not merely a color—it seeps, stretches, and expands like a trace of life itself.
Each stroke that remains upon the surface is like the trembling of the heart.
Within it lies not calculation, but the truth of a single moment.
Through the one-take discipline of Hisseki-jutsu, the brush becomes free from intention, directly linking the movement of ink with the depths of the spirit.
Too much force will crush it; too little, and the line will break.
Only in the delicate balance between hand and heart does the true “Hibiki” appear.
In the silence that follows completion, a soundless sound remains.
When the final stroke was placed, a faint tremor spread through the space, leaving an echo that reaches into the viewer’s chest.
This resonance cannot be heard with the ear—it is felt through existence itself.
Within it lie the pulse of life, the murmurs of nature, and the memories of humanity—all waves of living energy overlapping as one.
“Hibiki” is not a display of strength.
Rather, it symbolizes the way inner power expands outward with calm and grace.

The purpose of this work was to make that unseen connection visible through the ancient medium of ink.

Behind the Scenes
In the quiet of morning, I felt something slowly rise from deep within my chest.
It was like a prayer—yet also a form of conviction.
In this work, “Hibiki,” I poured the five guiding forces that form the core of my Hisseki-jutsu:
the fortunes of Talent, Health, Wealth, Grace, and Harmony.
Each represents a current that flows through life, and with every movement of the brush, that energy is awakened within the ink.
The work was created on an F20 canvas.
By facing a broader surface than in my previous piece, I sought to give shape to a stronger and more expansive release of energy.
As I lifted the brush, a surge of power gathered in my fingertips and trembled faintly.
That vibration merged with the weight of the ink and radiated outward across the canvas.
I abandoned all thoughts of balance or structure, entrusting everything to the moment when a line is born.
As the ink sank into the fibers and slowly spread, it felt as though the five fortunes were responding to one another—merging and harmonizing within the space.
The essence of Hisseki-jutsu lies in the truth of a single stroke.
Every hesitation, doubt, or imbalance within my heart leaves a trace upon the surface.
“Hibiki” was born in that delicate tension—between strength and stillness.
With each line, I infused intention: the flow of talent, the energy of vitality, the breath of prosperity, the light of grace, and the quiet strength of harmony.
As the brush advanced, I felt the energies converge within the air, rising as an invisible light that filled the space.
At the instant of the final stroke, the ink burst, and the silence shifted.
My body trembled slightly as unseen waves rippled outward.
Even after setting the brush down, I could still feel the lingering resonance.
It was not completion—it was the moment when prayer took form.
“Hibiki” is the record of an instant where inner power and the waves of fortune resonated as one.
It is more than a work of calligraphy—it is a testament of prayer, in which life and fortune unite through the movement of ink.

Kanji meaning
Meaning of the Kanji “Hibiki” (響)
The character “響” (Hibiki) means resonance, echo, or vibration—not merely a physical sound, but an unseen force that connects all living things.
Etymologically, the character is composed of two parts: “音” (oto / sound) and “鄉” (kyō / to face or respond).
Together, they express the idea of sounds calling and responding to each other, symbolizing the moment when separate presences become one through vibration.
In ancient Chinese texts, it is described as 「聲相應也」—“when sounds respond to one another.”
In Japanese calligraphy, “Hibiki” goes beyond the idea of sound.
It represents the silent pulse that flows through existence, the energy that moves between hearts, and the moment of harmony between the visible and invisible worlds.
The resonance does not fade; it lingers in space, like a spiritual aftertone that continues even when the brush has left the surface.
As a symbol, “響” embodies the state where inner strength and outer expression unite.
