I lost twenty-four beloved family members and relatives in the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011.
The loss was so sudden, so absolute, that there was nowhere in my heart to place it.
For many years, I lived face-to-face with emotions that had no place to go.
Among them, the feeling of “resentment” born from deep sorrow quietly, yet surely, weakened my spirit.
I learned the weight of that emotion through painful experience.
And now, somewhere in the world, there are children who—just like me—have lost the people they love.
They stand in confusion, overwhelmed by emotions too heavy for a small heart to carry.
When I think of them, my chest tightens.
I have a wish.
I do not want the children who will shape our future to bear emotions that scar the heart.
I want a world where “hope,” not “resentment,” takes root in every soul.
I pray that this wish reaches the hearts of us adults as well.
This single character, “Peace,” was written with all of those feelings inside me.
When I stood on the sand, brush in hand, with Mt. Fuji rising in the distance,
the coldness in the wind and the warmth of the light touched my heart as if embracing both past and future at once.
In that moment, I found myself quietly praying:
—May a world come where no heart has to be hurt any longer.
Through calligraphy, I want to deliver that prayer.
If even one ray of light can reach someone living in pain…
If that small light can help carry someone into tomorrow…
“Peace” is my personal prayer,
and at the same time, it is a wish I gently extend toward the future.
Behind the Scenes
“Peace” is a work I created by the sea at dawn.
It was a moment just after daybreak, when a faint light spread from beyond the horizon,
and both the sky and the ocean seemed to slowly awaken.
Only the gentle sound of the waves echoed, and in that stillness—
as if the world had paused for a brief moment—I picked up my brush.
The soft morning light reflected on the paper, glowing into a warm vermilion.
When I began the first stroke, the light shimmered as if responding to the tip of my brush.
The scent of Sumi ink drifted into the sea breeze,
and I felt my breath quietly merge with the rhythm of nature.
With each stroke, the color of the sky shifted little by little,
as though the artwork and the dawn were moving toward completion in the same rhythm.
To me, writing in nature is like receiving a gentle blessing that says,
“A new day is beginning.”
The piece “Peace,” written in the morning light,
holds within it the air, the light, and the silence that existed in that exact moment.
When people who shape the world – especially the adults in positions of power- see this work,
I hope it becomes a small prompt, a reminder,
to avoid choices that will harm the children who will inherit our future.
That is my wish.
Kanji meaning
[平 – Hei]
The character “平” originally carries the meaning of “level,” “even,” or “calm.”
It represents a state where there is
• no tilt
• no disturbance
• no wavering
— a condition of quiet stillness.
In its ancient form, the character depicts the act of leveling the ground,
smoothing uneven surfaces.
From that image arose the meanings of
“uniformity,” “harmony,” and “tranquility.”
In the world of calligraphy, “平” symbolizes the quiet breath that guides the brush,
and the steady state of mind required to move the brush with clarity.
[和 – Wa]
The character “和” expresses the idea of
“things or people coming together in gentle balance.”
Its radical “禾” represents a rice ear,
while “口” symbolizes human voice, expression, or prayer.
Originally, the character described
“ceasing conflict, accepting one another,
and sharing the fruits of life together.”
Over time, it came to embody concepts such as
“harmony,” “warmth,” “coexistence,” and “peaceful relationships.”
In calligraphy, “和” governs the balance of the entire piece—
the harmony between thick and thin lines,
the depth of ink, and the interplay with empty space.
[Summary]
“平” represents stillness.
“和” represents harmony.
When these two are combined,
the word expresses not only peace in the outer world
but also “a sense of inner calm” within the heart.
